2000 grill disassembly?

Post by GoldHawg »

I have some center sections on the 2000 grilles that I am thinking of getting rechromed. They appear to have some sort of stud that is riveted in or something. Not sure how to separate. Appreciate your counsel.

I believe that center section is stainless steel and not originally chromed. Not easy but it can be straightened and buffed to a high shine. The studs should have threads and a nut where they mount to your back plate. Yours appear to be rounded off. Probably rusted together too. Penetrating oil, heat, cut off the nut? Too much turning can break the stud off the front mid-grill section. Not the end of the world because you could then use a a plated bolt and nut to re-secure it to the back plate.

I straightened mine and I am now getting ready to sand it up to 5000 grit and then buff it.

Those look like a form of closet bolt that a previous owner put in simply because the shape of the head keeps them from turning. I would drill them out and replace with stainless steel.

Those came that way in 1970. Mine has them too. Yep, drill em out....carefully.

If you are going to paint the inside black again like a stock one, I'd just clean them up from all the rust and paint them too. A small wheel in a dremmel gets in there.
