What is this bracket for?

There was nothing attached to this bracket under the rear edge of the passenger compartment of my '67, and I don't recall anything there on my 67.5 either. Why is it there?

I am planning to use it to mount my third brake light.

That is the center rear hard top latch location for the factory hard top.
