Installing new rubber around the vent windows of a high windshield. The framing seems to be stainless
but with matte or "frosting" over it. Some of it is worn off showing the stainless through.
I'm thinking of just polishing it to stainless.
Was the matte original ?

Tis stainbless - the 'frosting' was to reduce glare - a 'safety' issue.

BTW - I found it really hard to compress the frame to get those teeny little screws in, so I used a much longer one with a nut and washer attached, screwed the screw into the frame and then tightened the nut to compress the frame enough so that I could get the 2nd one in.

How can I get the bold from the crankshaft loose, I need to replace the gears and chain. with the engine inside the car.
The problem is that I turn it now trough the compression.

Put the gearbox into 4th [or 5th] and pull on the emergency brake
If you have the facility, use a compressed air rattle gun on the pulley retaining bolt.

thanks, that works, I got it open.
When I take the aluminum cover from the gears do I have to take the oil off the engine or not.
I mean is the oil level lower than the cover off the gears.

I think if you just jack up the rear you should be safe. 5 speed different from 4-speed.

Peter, you got the wrong gears in mind, i mean the front cam and crank gear with the chain.
And when I take that cover away will the oil flows out or will it stay in the carter pan.

Oops - thought you were talking about transmission. Helps to ACTUALLY read the post <G>. I would have thought that all the oil would be in the pan - so no issue - then again - unlike the transmission - not a big deal to capture and refill.

Another quick (?) question from me- how do you remove seats from a 1600? I'm trying to get these seat covers off my seats, and it's looking like I'll actually have to remove the seats to get the darn things off the seat bottoms. A google search could not turn up the answer for me. It's dark now and I can't work on it any longer, but I thought I'd get a head start from the experts before tackling it in the morning. Tips? Where to start? Thanks as always!

There are 4 studs per seat, 2 per rail, that go through the floor pan.
I suggest they are easier to get to than the fasteners that fix the rails to the seat frames.
From under the car, the outers are easy to find/see, the inners more difficult.

LHS is more difficult again thanks to the exhaust system.

Use a ratchet with an 8" extension to reach the nuts underneath the car.

You will need to have the car up off the ground to allow yourself to get under there

I would not call it extreme measures.
1) You are only removing 4 bolts/nuts per seat - quite easy with the car jacked up. And my oft repeated caveat, TIGHTEN one flat on the bolt/nut before loosening.
2) Removing the covers is WAY easier since you have clearer access to the clips that hold the upholstery on and whilst I have not done it, it MUST be easier to stretch the material when on a bench rather than in a car. I would NEVER try this in a car.
3) Quite possibly, you might want to tighten/replace the straps under the seat that give 'cushioning' - likely they are tired .
4) And like many things on the roadster (and other cars) - get stuck in, do everything needed, no short cuts, and you will have confidence that you will likely NEVER have to address that particular issue again.

Like Peter said. Seat removal is not that difficult. I rebuilt my seat bottoms and replaced the rubber strapping on the seat bottoms. I bought Deans upholstery seat covers and had a shop install.

Did the Roadster ever have 15/16" brake cylinders? I was going through my box of rear brake parts and remembered that I got this one in a box of parts I bought some years ago. It says Tokico Japan on one side and what looks like 15/16 on the other but the 16 looks more like just a 6. There is also an H on both sides and F1 stamped on one side. This is a decent pic and you can see the fraction I refer to. Thanks

Remove the seats, you will be glad you did if you are re-skinning them. They are easy to remove and replace. Once the car is up it will take you about 5 minutes to remove both. Less if you have air or electric tools to remove the nuts.

And once removed you can assess and clean up the bottoms of the seats and you will have much more access to what you need to get to put o the new skin. Just do one seat and complete it. Save the other for another day or do it afterwards. I was a little tired after completing one. I re-installed the seat and did the 2nd two weeks later.
