Hey Mike, Todd has asked a similar question as your initial posting, and it's underway in the General section.

Seems appropro to post it over here too, even though you've settled on the Hankooks. Others may tune into this thread later.

My recommendation:

Vredestein "Sprint Classic"" in 185/70-14 fit great on stock wheels and look correct under stock fenders. "H" Speed rated/130 mph. Best $100/tire I ever spent. They will rot long before they wear out, since I run the same sort of mileage as (Todd) annually. Both Pam & I like the ride, not only when pressed on the ramps but also at highway straightline speeds. Our first trip when we got the set a few years ago was a 500 mile excursion from Annapolis to the southern Outer Banks. Excellent.

Sounds good Paul. Good idea to document here as well.

The Hankooks were $60/tire minus a $100 rebate at the time, so I came in at about net $250 for 4 tires out the door. I have a few hundred miles on them and I am pretty pleased so far. I put them through some mtn twisties and highway cruising last weekend and was not disappointed.

Does the 185/70/14 fit on aftermarket 14" wheels? I thought they might rub.

^ You'd have to know the width and offset, or backspace, of the wheel, to answer the question.

I suppose the aspect ratio to choose for stock wheels would depend on a few factors:

1. Is the suspension stock or lowered?
2. How much do you want to fill the wheel well for a stock look?
3. Do you care about the speedo being off?
4. Cornering response
5. Others...

I think a 185/60/14 would look pretty small for a stock look, but would be more responsive.

As for rubbing on an aftermarket wheel, you'd need to know the geometry of the wheel to make an assessment.

I just put new tires on my 67.5 1600, 4.5 inch original factory rims. Goodyear P185/70R14, looks good, good clearance at rear wheel well, handles great, nice ride.

I was helping a friend look for tires for his E-type Jag and came across this article. I figured I'd post it here for reference:

I have z steelies where I had a local welding shop remove the hubcap clips from my original wheels and attach to the wider wheels. I'm running 195s but appearance still looks stock. Just another option.

Bringing this thread back from the dead. Came across these 2 options for white wall tires in 185/70/14. Anyone have experience with cooper tires or uniroyal? I really wish Hankook still made whitewalls in 185/70/14, but it seems like they only make 185/75/14 now.

Cooper:

I have the Uniroyals, and I think they are a higher quality tire than the Coopers. That's a pretty great price btw...
