oilfilter problems

Post by peter »

It is difficult to find in Holland a good oil-filter with the right height.
I found one that's fit but the pipe in the housing is to long(0,5"), can I make this pipe shorter?
And when this works how much room do I need between the pipe and the inner upside.
The oil filter is 4,8" 122mm high but with the older model engine (1966)to short I believe.

You can make the pipe shorter but the main idea is to keep the filter full. Vendors offer pipes with a Bologna cut tip (angled cut) and a cap welded on so if you bottom the pipe to the filter end, oil path will not be blocked. You may be able to get original filter from Nissan.

Im not sure that tube does much. Cause there is a big hole in the filter base. Goes straight to the pan.
Has anyone taken there filter off after ...say 4 days and have much oil left in the filter housing? Thats one reason why they make those little things called anti drain valves in the filters. To keep some of the oil in them for start up?

Is there a Roadster specific part or are these things "generic" for lack of a better term?

Thanks

Any good quality oil filter has a anti drain back valve built into the oil filter. that little round button in the bottom of the oil filter. Help keep some oil in the filter to prevent oil starvation on start ups. Silicon valves seem to be some of the best.

I shortened the tube for a 1/2" and made an angle of 45 degrees on it, the filter fits now. thanks.

Hallo Richard,

I see that the tube looks much shorter than mine and it is not so deep as mine into the filter.
Tomorrow get the chassis a sandblasting and a paint job.

This is the filter I found in the Netherlands MANN-FILTER - Ref: W 818/81
Mann filters are often used in Europe.

I have been using the Motorcraft FL-1 in both my datsuns for years. You will have to shorten the tube a bit.

^ That is GREAT to know!
I use that in my Explorer, my Impala, and now....My Datsun. I think I'll have to paint it though :-)

I came across this oil filter cross reference list on the Fram Website. It may be of interest as an update for the Tech Wiki. I've been using the WIX 51512, available locally.
