Re: Tach cable O-ring sizes
I am trying to do this job today. Does that big ass 28 or 29mm nut come off to facilitate this job? Naturally, I have a 27 and 30 mm socket. Thanks a lot Murphy! I'd be happy to go out and buy the correct socket than fiddle around trying to pry that seal out of there with a homemade tool. Is that the correct play..?

Re: Tach cable O-ring sizes
I don't think it does have to come off, if the cable is off, there is a small plastic shield in mine, it fits the cable housing, but has a slightly larger than cable hole in the center and appears to act a a "dam" to keep oil from corkscrewing up the cable to the back of the tach and eventually dripping on your feet, or onto brand new tan carpet.
Before I knew of this factory "dam" or seal, I put a custom made rubber washer - cut from a bicycle tube with a hole made by forcing the cable center through it. Worked great for years, until I learned of the correct part. If however you have an oil leak from around/behind this big nut, then it may have to come off to replace any seal/o-ring behind it.

Re: Tach cable O-ring sizes
I finished the job taking the big nut off. I purchased a 1 1/8 wrench for $9 rather than use pliers. I would say it needed to come off. Not impressed with Nissan's proposed task of removing the seal. Borderline ridiculuos.
I'll need to ask more q's about your "third" seal if...for now I hope that's the last leak and the drip pan will be for alerts, not keeping the floor clean.

Re: Tach cable O-ring sizes
Gotcha, so you were addressing a leak at the nut and not from/of the cable itself.

Re: Tach cable O-ring sizes
I put a new seal tach cable seal on yesterday. My o-ring was fine, but I did buy a bag of 32710-14600 o-rings from Nissan but they were too big. (Hmmm?)
Seal 32709-14600 fit well. I installed it with the grooves towards the gear.
Attached are some pics for reference. Groove Side:

Re: Tach cable O-ring sizes
Just pulled the tach drive out of my 1970 2000. I see the seal inside the housing and finally worked that guy out. Pressed in a new seal and replaced the large rubber O-Ring on the outside of the housing. In searching for more information on how to do this all correctly, I found this thread. My tach drive does not have a seal, washer or O-Ring on the tach drive gear shaft. Should it? The shaft has a groove which looks like a seal would go there. And the picture above shows what looks like a plastic washer/seal between the housing and the drive gear. Is this supposed to be on my drive gear and is missing?
Here is what it looked like when I pulled it out of the distributor base today.

Re: Tach cable O-ring sizes
There's a seal that goes INSIDE the drive - check carpartsmanual.com. While you are at it, you might as well get TWO, since the speedo drive at the transmission end takes the same one.

Re: Tach cable O-ring sizes
I replaced the seal INSIDE the housing. From Mike's picture, in the post above mine, it appears as though there is ANOTHER seal or washer that he is pointing to. Is this correct? It looks like the inner seal, only installed on the shaft in the wrong place. Or is there supposed to be a seal on this shaft?
Before I put it all back in, can someone verify?

Re: Tach cable O-ring sizes
The seal is meant to go inside the housing on the cable side. (Mike's picture is not correct.)
When installed, the seal's outside diameter will be press fitted into the inside diameter of housing.
As you thread on the housing, the shaft will pass first thru the housing and then into the internal seal.
Cheers
Ray B.

Re: Tach cable O-ring sizes
Ok, so I'm trying to fix the common tach issue, it seems most people are having issues with 32709-14600 and 32710-14600, as shown in my picture. But after inspecting them, they seem fine. The issue, I think, with mine is the third seal on the cable side. It looks like it was installed at an angle so now it's damaged and doesn't create a good seal. Anyone know where I can find this part?

Re: Tach cable O-ring sizes
One of the vendors has a kit for ~ 30 bucks or more with shipping. It has an O-ring and two other seals. I just did mine today and put the o-ring outside on the big diameter of 32709-14600 then the knurled nut on the tach cable presses against it when tightened. The hard seal goes inside 32709-14600 (before the oring and the cable are attached ). I took the dizzy off and the pedestal off and used an 11 mm socket to press in the new seal (after removing the old one). The same old part as peeeter shows above (with question mark) came out of my tach cable (and my speedo cable too). New part replacement is a flat fiber like washer. Try Dean Apostle dastsunParts.com part 2687. It will not look like your part but should work.
I pirated Mike's photo and added colors (red and green) to show where I put the seal and the o-ring.
And if it does not work I cannot be held liable! Oh yea and note I am a roadster new-bee who has owned his roadster since 1973

Thanks msampsel, i just ordered the kit from Dean yesterday. Note, I'm a roadster fanatic, who has owned his roadster since 2014 Would be interesting to have "Owner since [year]" as part of our profile or signatures.
