Gas tank

Post by perryt200 »

What's the best way if any to clean one? Or is it buy a new one?

Has anyone bought the new ones? Listed on ebay or they have a website too. Ebay says the 2000, I called the guy and asked about 1600, he didn't know.

Thanks

There is no difference in the tank between 1600 & 2L. Only slight differences between years in the number of fittings.

I have an eBay 69 tank in my 67.5. It fit fine. All I had to do was block off the fuel return connection.

I believe there are differences in the early and late filler necks & gas caps, though....is that right ? So, can either of the filler necks fit any year gas tank ?

The new one on eBay will require a different fuel sender than what came on the 1965-1967 cars and they are not cheap.

Here is the only new one I know of that is available for the 1967.5-1970 Roadsters. If you have to go with a new tank, or used for that matter, that is for the later Roadster you will need this Sender. You may want to place a Wanted to Buy listing on this site and see if anyone has a good used one or NOS.

I was in contact with the Manufacturer / Seller of the new Tank, MOPAR PRO prior to going to Prototype. He asked me for my opinion on the new production. I said for maximum sales I would build a hybrid tank, that being a later tank design that had the return line fitting but accepted the old style Fuel Sender. The reason being is that the old style fuel tanks can accept a $15 VW fuel sender. Curtis has made that work with minimal modifying of the VW Sender, NOT the Tank. MOPAR only had the newer 1967.5-1970 Tank to Prototype from so he didn't go in that direction. His tank is the same for both 1600 and 2000's.

Definitely see if your existing tank can be rehabbed.

I gotcha,...mine is the original tank for the '67 1600, and I'm now remembering that issue about the late sender being needed for a late tank.....senior moment....duh ! I got the impression there was a cheaper sender from a different source, other than DatsunParts that fit the late tank. I got a little "mixed-up". Sorry for the wasted bandwidth !

Thanks Dac,
Mike

I think a lot of work arounds go undocumented in the parts interchange thread so hopefully someone will see this discussion that have figured this out.
