bleeding master cylinder . bleeder screw issues

Post by roadstermike »

Today while trying to bleed my myaster cylinder I noticed that when I loosen the bleeder screws, air is getting past the threads. The bleeder screw seems to wobble a bit when loosened. No leaks when tight. Should I just put some Teflon tape to seal it? Pipe. sealant? Thanks for input. I was thinking about getting speed bleeders so maybe I should go that route.

I'd go that route. probably someone over torqued them in the past, and they are made pretty soft on purpose.
I still do the "dipped hose" method on mine, evne though I have speedbleeders, but have had them for years and have bled them a lot, and they last great.

Oh, and definitely use a flare line wrench, it is worth its weight in GOLD!

^2nd the flarenut wrench.
If you have someone pushing down the pedal as you tighten, you should be fine, air can only get in when there is negative pressure.
"When all else fails, force prevails!" Ummm, we're gonna need a bigger hammer here.

I love speedbleeders. I found out that there are many brands now - I guess their patent expired. I just bought 4 of them at Advance Auto Parts on my street - they are called Dorman Brake Helpers lol. You just crack them, and sit in the car and pump the pedal - no need for a second helper - but it's nice to have one to keep your reservoir filled up :-)

This is normal. Should not cause a problem for pressure bleeding.

If you are vacuum bleeding, you can add some sealer, just be careful to no get it near the sealing area.

Thanks for the input. I will try getting a better seal and then go to speed bleeders if needed.

Okay. I bought two speed bleeders for my master and it turns out the bleed screws are smaller than the 3/8 thread size called out on the forum. So does anyone know by chance what size threads the master cylinder bleeders are? Thanks.

Mike, I bought 4 speed bleeders. Two didn't fit my front calipers, my rears were fine. I don't remember their size. Maybe they will work for you. Let me dig em up. Maybe another parts swap where we both win.

Oh - I didn't mean to put speed bleeders on the master. You really shouldn't need them there as you can bleed the master w/ one person by running a short length of hose from the nipple back up into the reservoir and have it end "below the waterline."

The front and rear bleeders should ALL be 3/8-24 on a 67.5 Ask me how I know - I just installed 4 on my 67.5 on Sunday.

Buried in the forum are the sizes for the brake master and clutch slave if you want to use them. The speed bleeders on the front will work if you take the small BB out of the bleeder hole. Must do.

I thought about putting a small hose over into the reservoir too but my issue when I crack the bleed nut on the master, air is getting past the threads as I pump. My brake pedal has a lot of travel in it and figure there must be air in the master. I know Ive let more air in into the system as my pedal is softer now than before. and this is a new master cylinder too.

I have used a tight fitting vinyl hose on the bleeder into the reservoir. But watch out it doesn't pop out flinging brake fluid all over-use plenty of towels.

I just purchased and installed goodridge speed bleeders on my master cylinder. Part number SB7100. There is also a part number SB700L which are longer than normal. The non L version fit perfect. These things are life savers. I also put them on front and back stock brakes, bled the whole system by myself. Super easy.
