Dash Guages Gaskets

I am reconditioning the dash. I took everything off so that I can strip and repaint it. The guages had old rubber gaskets around them that broke into pieces when I removed them from the dash. Has anyone found replacements for these? I did not see anything listed on the vendors sites, nor have i seen it discussed before. I am headed to the autoparts store today, but thought I would try here too.

Boy, that might be a tough one. I know exactly what your are referring to but I do not think any of the vendors have them. Dean, you here? That may truly be one of those hard to find parts. If you do stumble across something that works please let us all know. Good luck.

We had a similiar issue with an Indian motorcycle. Ended up that a rubber o-ring fit the bill??

Haven't disassembled mine, so not familar w/ the gasket nor are they shown/listed in the parts manuals.

Is it round like an o-ring, or a special shape, or.....???

It is hard to tell what it was. It just crumbled into pieces. I am not sure if I even need to put it back in or if it was original. The PO had covered the dash with a combination of bamboo paper and brown paint sometime in the past. So he may have put them in then. I will try to find something like an o-ring and see how it works out. I can not get back to it until the weekend, so it gives me a few days to look at autopart stores.

You know what? If I recall correctly there is only one gauge(the clock) that has that rubber gasket on it. I do not think the others had any thing on them. It has been a while since I messed with the real roadster gauges so I could be full of it but........... Any one with a stock low windshield roadster should be able to take a peek real quick. You got me to thinking again. Man, my head hurts. Sidney, where are you?

Here I am! The gaskets that I believe are in question are on the combined gauges for the 1967.5 model cars. The rubber gasket under the clock often survives. The speedo and tach had none. The combined gauges though had a strange o-ring affair. I have never looked for replacements, so I don't know if they are out there. An O ring should work fine if you can match the dimensions. A quick perusal of the parts book does not even show them being there, but virtually all of the 67.5 units seemed to have had them.

Oh, the clock gasket is behind the trim, but on the front of the dash. These o rings are behind the dash around the trim on the combined gauges. Fun stuff!

I think I remember seeing those on mine.. but I took them off thinking a PO maybe put them on. It was only on the clock. Does it need to have them? I forgot if I put it in or not.

I took photos of what was left of the old gaskets. I posted them to webshots. I will post something when I find replacments.

I have taken one of the guages apart and the paint is peeling. Anyone tried repainting them? I was thinking of the Krylon Glowz paint.

I found something to use on the inside of the smaller guages. After taking them apart, i needed to replace the rubber seal between the cover and the glass. I ended up using .125" black screen spline to keep the glass from rattling. As for the gasket between the guage and the dash, I am going to use a homemade piece of rubber cut from a shower pan piece i have.

Wow! I'm actually looking forward to making my dash and gauges pretty, too. Of course, having the earlier chrome rings isn't going to be as cheap or easy as painting.
