Roadster Sighting (1600 SOLEXES INSIDE!!!)

Post by Alvin »

I drove the roadster to work today and boy am I glad I did!
On the way home I spotted a 240z:
Image
I took some local roads to avoid traffic and I was at a stoplight when roadster drove right past me! I crossed three lanes to catch up and got behind at the light:
Image
I was very excited. I could see the driver looking in his mirror, so I assumed he'd pull over. He did not so I followed him thinking how terrible am I for being a stalker :P That roadster scooted! I had to know what was under the hood.
I follow him all the way to his home and turns out it his grandfather's roadster. He said it's the only car he's ever driven that made him enjoy driving! It is a '66 SPL.
Image
He popped the hood open and there was a 1600 (you Solex jockeys will love this) with dual Mikuni 40's!!! He made the linkage himself and a nifty cold air intake/airbox:

Lighting was bad but I tried to take lots of pics:

Then I started noticing little details here and there like this oil cooler!

And check this out, split bumpers!!!

He did not know if it was a stroker or not(or what one was) but I told him to get his grandfather on 311s.org. Sounds like really cool, ingenuitive guy. He is also restoring a 1928 Model T.

I'm pretty jealous that you get to see so many fellow roadster owners in CA. I've never seen on driving on the street.

Wow, I dig that car. I really like how he did the carb linkage, nice and solid. The 2L radiator and water outlet is a brilliant move. Bummer about the front end damage (from the hood opening too far) but hey, that is easy enough to fix.

Cool car.

Love the airbox. The smaller head, shorter intake, smaller carb adaptors allows for so much more room than a U20.

Alvin,

The carbs are not Mikuni's. They are Italian Solexes.

This "Grandfather" dude gets more and more interesting... custom airbox, oil cooler, nice fab work, EI ignition, Italian Solexes...

The "man of mystery" guy from the beer commercials maybe???
